Unexpected Predator. During one of his journey to Antarctica, Paul Nicklen, a National Geographic photographer found himself face to face with a huge female leopard seal. As soon as this vicious ocean predator spotted him, she came right towards him and opened her mouth. At that time Paul feared for his life, but his fears were soon dissolved. Instead of seeing him as a threat, this leopard seal saw him as someone that needed taking care of, and soon enough she took him under her wing.

For four days, this leopard seal fed and took care of Paul. At first she caught a live penguin and taught Paul to hunt. When Paul didn’t react to this hunting lesson, she slowly killed penguins and offered it to him. This behavior startled Paul as leopard seal are known for being fierce predators. They hunt and attack their pray with strong jaws and long, sharp teeth. Even though at first this predator wanted to eat Paul, she quickly changed her attitude towards him. No one knows why she changed her mind, not even Paul. #National Geographic
